EO 601 – Ingrid Ravenscroft

Ingrid Ravenscroft
Mercantile Bank Limited
Head: Internal Audit

Why did you attend the programme?
From the first time I read the CS Lewis quote: “Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching‘, I became intrigued by the concepts of integrity and ethics – and how, as normal, ordinary people, we struggle to do the right thing… especially when there are consequences.

As an internal auditor, it was important for me to understand how the organisation I work for can entrench its existing ethical culture in its people and its operations – and what my role could be in that process.

Although I am not presently a practicing ethics officer, I felt that the ethics officer certification programme would enable me to spend time learning about a topic that fascinates me and that would also have practical application in my personal and work life.

How did it benefit you personally?
The ethics officer certification programme gave me a far broader foundation in ethics theory than I had previously expected. It also enabled me to see the application of ethics management concepts – in practice and as an internal auditor – and, hence, enabled me to better understand how to solve some of the ethical dilemmas I, and the organisation I work for, might face.

How is it benefiting your company?
I serve on my employer’s Ethics Advisory Committee and consult on the development, roll-out and implementation of ethics policies, strategies, and training material – the learnings I have taken from the ethics officer certification programme have helped me add value in these processes.
